Pebble or Rock???

We have been talking a lot about words that are pebbles and words that are ROCKS. A word that is a pebble does not tip the scale like a rock. Rocks are strong and have muscle!!!! You can see our list below of some words that are pebbles and Rocks. We found rocks outside our classroom and decorated the rocks to make a Rock Garden of Words. We are always on the look out during read aloud time for Rock Words. At writing time, we are trying to put Rock words in our stories. Last week the word joyful was very popular. This week I am hearing many kids use the word jubilant!

Showing Our Feelings At Writing

We are learning in KC that good writers show how they are feeling! We are becoming experts on telling our feelings. We made a strong feelings chart last week and now we are working on what the feeling looks like and sounds like.  We played charades using our bodies and trying to guess the feeling.

We read the following
We brainstormed what would a person do, act or say if they were feeling
In small groups we worked on the feeling sheets below! Each group recorded back to the class.

On a different day we worked on creating showing sentences below. We started with the sentences
It was the first of school I felt happy.
I lost my mom I was sad.

Writing Workshop

We read the story Henry's Show and Tell by Nancy Carlson. In this story Henry is feeling very nervous about sharing in front of his kindergarten class. We noticed that Nancy Carlson used many feeling words and feeling pictures.
We are learning that good writers tell how they are feeling in their stories . We made a Strong Feelings Chart. At writing time this week many children added how they felt.

Writing Workshop Reflection

Reflecting on Our Writing Workshop Stories

At large group time we created a list of things we used to do at writing workshop and what we do now! You can see the list above.
On stay days this week we worked on picking writing workshop stories to put in our Portfolio's. We talked a lot about selecting pieces that show growth. We filled in the sheet I used to ________but now I _________. Many children were surprised at how much they have grown!

Writing Workshop this Week

At writing this week we talked about how writers use words to help readers visualize what is happening in the text.  We started the lessons by pretending to be outside on the playground making images in our minds. I encouraged students to use their 5 senses. We shared with a partner and the large group too.

 I Knew It Was Winter
The students came to the rug and we brainstormed one noun to go after the number word
On different days we went back and took a picture in our mind of what the snowballs were doing? We also added a "when", "where" or "how". Thursday stay day kids illustrated the final piece!
We made a Valentine one too!

On this page we originally had floating in the store window and we talked about how putting a name of the store really gives the reader a better picture in their minds.

We took the same poem and created a Valentine Poem. We followed the same steps as before except this time, we are inserting adjectives and other descriptors in different parts. You can see the times we went back and added with different colors.
On Monday, I saw one Valentine Fairy with sparkling wings floating in the air shooting Cupid arrows.
